Menfolk : nurturing, fatherhood and more

It has been a few days, yes almost a full week since the celebration of Father's Day, all over the world.

While we are still within the month, it is pertinent to look at the menfolk who deliberately nurture others - children/wards/students/proteges  etc.

These group of intentional men are not just raising children rather they are raising nations. This uniqueness cuts across the board irrespective of the titles - biological dad, step-dad, uncle, big cousin,  foster dad, adopted son turned care-giver, Γ¨gbon adugbo (an older, recognized, respected person in the community - a mentor), their thoughtful contributions are profound and make huge impact that affects the next generations - the ripple effects.

The contributions made: school runs, the gentle back-pats, how to knot a tie, the wise counsels, gentle reprimands and admonitions to set things right, or just being a great example of a wholesome individual make all the difference in the child's life as he/she grows through different stages to adulthood.

Great fatherhood, indeed nurturing will always choose presence over pride, guidance over dominiation and yes, empathy over ego.

As you know, men have always been seen as distant authorities, almost devoid of the display of emotions - head of the family, to be deferred to, one who carries the huge responsibility of provision for the family, albeit without any display of affection, no close ties at such.

A much needed change, mind-set shift cannot be over-emphasized at this interesting time, not to lose the already loose family values and desired humane society.

We are already witnessing a gradual shift which includes:
- homes finding harmony - inclusiveness - all voices being listened to.
- communities finding shared directions
- children/wards - both boys and girls learning balance by what is lived and not just taught.

It is time to raise the bar of great, intentional nurturing.

Let the menfolk take the more holistic lead to raise well-rounded humans, with all the togetherness of heart, head and hands, in sync.

What sayeth thou?
